Welcome back to Term 6! Our Topic this term is the seaside! Over the course of the term we will be comparing and contrasting seaside holidays 100 years ago, with current day holidays. We will also be investigating transport through the ages, rockpool creatures and inventions!
Our Talk4Writing text this term is 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' By Ronda Armitage. We have been studying the characters in the story, acting out key events and thinking of our own ways to deter the seagulls from eating Mr Grinling's lunch! Popular ideas were hot chilli sandwiches and marmite! Next week we will be completing our own story maps of the story and learning about lighthouses.
There has been lots of maths going on this week with the focus being on bar charts. The children used their previous knowledge of weight and capacity to carry out investigations and then plot their results onto a bar chart. We finished the week learning how to carry out a survey and record our findings on a tally chart. We linked our learning to the story, asking the children what their favourite sandwich filling is. Children could have a go at carrying out a survey at home and practise the skill of keeping a tally!
The Statutory National Year 1 Phonics Screening Check will be carried out during the week of the 10th June. This will just be treated as a normal phonics activity 1-1 with the class teacher so the children will be unaware that the check is taking place. A letter will be sent home with reports to inform you of the results of this check, and how results will be used as children move into Year 2. If you have any questions then please don't hesitate to ask your child's class teacher.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year One Team
