Week Ending: Friday 17th May 2019

This week we have continued exploring our 'Growing' topic, looking more closely at what we might find in a growing garden! The children finished writing their letters to Mrs Gascoigne about their fantastic garden ideas to improve the view from her office window. The children really used their imaginations, with ideas ranging from water features to treehouses! We concentrated on using persuasive language and vocabulary to convince Mrs Gascoigne that our ideas really would be a great addition to the school grounds! Later in the week, we focussed our learning on minibeasts. We firstly considered what actually classifies as a 'minibeast' and then used the school grounds to hunt for as many different creatures as we could find. We kept a tally of where we found them, looking for similarities and differences in where each minibeast likes to hide or live! On Friday, we learned lots of interesting facts about common minibeasts and then used non-fiction texts to write our own fact files. They were super!

Fractions have been the focus of our maths learning this week. We firstly divided shapes and objects into halves and quarters, and then used our new knowledge to solve fraction related word problems. We have also explored the many different ways of making 9, practicing recording number sentences. Next week we will return our learning to doubling and halving numbers and getting to grips with telling the time.

We carefully studied a variety of fruits during our art lessons, looking at all of the finer details to include in our own fruit sketches. We then used paint to create very realistic looking fruit!

As always, we continue to support the children in staying safe online. We used a variety of different resources to share with the children ways that they can ensure they stay safe when exploring online. The children developed a list of rules to follow and then had fun designing their own internet safety posters to remind themselves about it in the future.

Please continue to donate cereal boxes next week as we are going to turn them into some fantastic miniature gardens!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year One Team
