Admissions

Combe Down Primary is a popular school, NOR 408, and prospective parents are welcome to visit us to look around and see what goes on here. When a child joins us, we do everything we can to make sure they settle in as smoothly and quickly as possible.

How do I apply to admit or transfer my child to Combe Down?

Since becoming an academy school in July 2016, the responsibility for admissions has transferred from the Local Authority to the governors of Combe Down Primary School.

Reception applications (September intake):

All Reception applications for September 2017 remain subject to the previous admission arrangements as outlined in the Local Authority's admissions booklet

Application Arrangements for Reception places in September 2018 are outlined in the following document:   Admissions Arrangements 2018-19

All applications for Reception places for a September intake must be made directly to the Local Authority by midnight of 15 January.  BANES Admissions Webpage

In-Year Applications

All in year applications must be made on our Combe Down Primary School In Year Application Form

Where a parent/carer wishes to appeal an admissions decision, the following Appeals Form must be used.

The timetable for admissions appeals is as follows:  School Admission Appeals Timetable

Staff applying for a Reception place in 2018-19 must complete the Supplementary Information Form

Information about the Local Authority Fair Access Protocol can be found here.

Once we have received your application, it will be considered and if there is a vacancy we will then be in a position to offer you a place.  School places must be taken up within 28 school days of the offer being made.

Delayed Entry

Occasionally parents may consider that their child needs to be taught outside their chronological year group.  Generally speaking it is recommended that children are educated within the appropriate year group for their age however, individual cases can be considered in line with the B&NES delayed admissions policy.  Most requests to delay a child's admission to school come from the parent/carers of Summer Born Children.  Please note that parent/carers of Summer born children do not have a right to enter their child into a different year group, they simply have a right to request that their child is considered for education outside their year group.

As mentioned in the B&NES delayed admissions policy cases will only be agreed where exceptional circumstances apply and professional agreement has been reached that joining a lower year group is in the best interests of the child.  In view of this the Local Authority would always recommend that parent/carers of Summer born children make a reception application for their child's normal point of school admission (i.e. when they are 4 years old) as when reception places are offered there is an option for parent/carers to defer their child's start date to later in that academic year (January or April).  However, if a place is not taken up by April it will be lost.  Without professional agreement to a delayed admission any Summer born child who did not start school when they were eligible to do so would be joining a school in Year 1 and not in Reception.  Parents would have to make a separate In-Year application for their child and there is no guarantee that a place at a preferred school will be available.
